What is Dyslexia?


 “Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties with accurate and / or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”

Dyslexia Warning Signs


   Early Signs

  • Late/Delayed Speech
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Difficulty with rhyming words
  • Late establishing a dominant hand
  • Difficulty learning to tie shoes
  • Trouble memorizing alphabet or recognizing name
  • A close relative with reading difficulties
  • Learning the sequence of the alphabet 
  • homework takes forever, nightly "homework wars"
  • Unable to complete homework without assistance

  Reading

  • Slow, choppy, inaccurate reading
  • Difficulty making a connection between letters and the sounds they make
  • Cannot "sound out words" mostly guesses
  • Skips or misreads prepositions (at, to, of)
  • Often can't read high-frequency sight words
  • HATES to read aloud
  • Poor Comprehension

  Speech and Language                     

  • When speaking, difficulty finding the correct word (lots of "whatyamacallits" and "thingies")
  • Articulation difficulties 
  • Verbal communication is likely better than written communication
  • Listening comprehension is typically higher than reading comprehension 

 

   Spelling and Writing

  • Poor Spelling 
  • Can memorize weekly spelling lists but cannot recognize same words when reading stories
  • Letter or number reversals past 2nd grade
  • Handwriting is difficult to read
  • Difficult to get ideas "on paper"
  • Often can't remember sight words (they, were, does) or homonyms (their, they're and there)
  • Difficulty telling time with a clock with hands

   Sequence and Direction

  • Confusion learning days of the week, months of the year
  • Confuses before and after, yesterday and tomorrow
  • Difficulty telling time on a clock with hands (analog)
  • Confuses b-d, p-q, b-p, m-n, j-q, and g-q

  Unexpected

  • Otherwise bright and capable individuals who struggle to read, write and spell
  • While individuals (children and adults) put forth great effort, they may continue to struggling with reading and spelling. Mistakenly people attribute the lack of progress in reading as being "lazy or unmotivated".
